La Jolla, CA – La Jolla Playhouse announces two special presentations of the acclaimed group Steam Powered Giraffe as part of its cabaret series on Sunday, March 24 at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The concerts will take place in the Playhouse’s specially-designed performance space in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre, created by the Playhouse’s scene shop artisans for the theatre’s 2011, 2012 and 2013 Galas.
The artists behind Steam Powered Giraffe started street busking as their signature robot-like characters in January 2008 in Balboa Park and instantly drew the attention of Southern California. Since then they’ve performed at such venues as The San Diego Fair, The San Diego Zoo, Legoland and numerous Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Steampunk Conventions. Their act combines the visual of robot pantomime with sketches, pop culture references, improvised comedic dialogue, and of course, original music. From their heartwarming nostalgic melodies to their funky cabaret rock, Steam Powered Giraffe’s songs are memorable, infectious and as unique as the robots themselves. Trained in pantomime by Seaport Village mime Jerry Hager, with collective backgrounds in clown, theatre, music, and visual design, Sam Luke, and the Bennett twins Christopher and David, have sculpted a striking homegrown performance that will leave you tapping your feet and humming for days. The malfunctioning, joke-spewing metal men play a collection of original Vaudeville inspired tunes fused with modern flare and executed in a super-sleek, one-of-a-kind performance. More than just a band, Steam Powered Giraffe is an experience that must be seen and heard by the entire family.
Tickets for Steam Powered Giraffe are $20 and are currently on sale by calling the Playhouse Patron Services Office at (858) 550-1010 or online at http://www.lajollaplayhouse.org/steam-powered-giraffe
